Lecture 3 (2/4) Project

“Always trust yourself and your own feeling, as opposed to argumentations, discussion, or introductions of that sort; if it turns out that you are wrong, then the natural growth of your inner life will eventually guide you to other insights. Allow your judgments their own silent, undisturbed development, which, like all progress, must come from deep within and cannot be forced or hastened. Everything is gestation and then birthing. To let each impression and each embryo of a feeling come to completion, entirely in itself, in the dark, in the unsayable, the unconscious, beyond the reach of one’s own understanding, and with deep humility and patience to wait for the hour when a new clarity is born: this alone is what it means to live as an artist: in understanding as in creating.”  – Rainer Maria Rilke

The dates will be significantly altered because the corresponding lecture on internal inspiration/creativity will be on 2/18. But I thought you might want to read it and let it settle in you for a bit before we start on it. It is not a standard lecture assignment but instead an art project. Read it, think about it, feel free to ask me questions.

Lecture 3 Project–Harvesting from Life

Lecture 4 Assignment will be based on our February 11 field trip to the Menil. Download assignment sheet next week and bring it along with your Morgue. Plan to be there from 11 to at least 2. Bring a sack lunch and drink. Arrange a carpool group and exchange cell phone numbers so that no one gets left behind.

My class (MW) will meet at the Cy Twombly Gallery (1501 Branard Street Houston, TX 77006) across the street from the Menil promptly at 11 am. Bill’s class (TTH) will meet at front doors of the Menil.

Other Friday field trip is March 11th and we will travel to the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
